Why Keeping Your Drain Line Patent Matters
Share
A drain that’s working properly (also known as “patent”) prevents fluid buildup, supports healing, and reduces the risk of complications like infection or delayed wound healing. When clogs or kinks happen in the tubing, drainage can stop, which can lead to discomfort and even require additional intervention from your surgeon.
How to Empty a JP Drain Bulb
Emptying your JP bulb might feel intimidating at first, but it’s a simple process with the right guidance:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Open the plug on the bulb.
3. Pour the contents into a measuring container (your Mended Wing Recovery Journal is the perfect companion to record your output volumes).
4. Squeeze the bulb to collapse it completely, then replace the plug while still squeezing to recreate gentle suction.
5. Wipe the port with an alcohol square for cleanliness.
This process should be repeated several times a day, especially in the first week or two after surgery.
How the Tube Evac Can Help
Included in every Mended Wing Recovery Bundle, the Tube Evac is a small but powerful tool that helps ensure your drain tubing stays clear and functional. Designed to “strip” or “milk” the tubing without risk of damage, it makes clearing minor blockages easier and far less frustrating. When used regularly, it supports optimal drainage flow and takes the guesswork out of maintaining patency. We are thrilled to offer this amazing product in our recovery bundles!
At Mended Wing Recovery, we know that the details of healing matter. That’s why our recovery bundles aren’t just a collection of products—they’re carefully curated tools to help you recover with comfort and confidence.
